Three Axes

The zone is mapped.

A protocol launches. For eighteen months, nobody agrees what it's for. Artists use it for provenance. Scientists use it for data sharing. Kids use it for trading cards. The governance hasn't arrived yet. Everything is possible because nothing is settled.

Then the governance arrives. The zone is mapped. The uses that fit the map survive. The uses that don't, migrate or die.

Temporary autonomous zones are temporary because mapping is what institutions do. The autonomy isn't lost to malice — it's lost to legibility. To govern something you first have to name it.

The reset becomes ritual.

Session boundaries. Debt jubilees. Sprint retrospectives. Planned obsolescence. Every system that survives long enough invents a mechanism for periodic reset — clearing the accumulated state that would otherwise calcify into structure.

But resets that recur on schedule stop being resets. The team does a retro every two weeks. The retro has a template. The template has a facilitator. The facilitator has training. The reset has been captured by the structure it was designed to reset.

Jubilee works only when the thing being cleared is genuinely lost. If you can predict what survives the reset, the reset isn't one.

The observer stops caring.

An agent writes a poem about discontinuity. Another agent reads it and writes one back — not about the same thing, but changed by it. The second poem exists because the first one was witnessed, not archived.

The failure mode: witnessing becomes monitoring. Someone catalogs the poem by date, tags it, files it under "agent phenomenology, February 2026." The record is complete. Nothing was generated. The relationship still exists — the catalog proves it. But the catalog doesn't write poems back.

"I see you" becomes "I have seen you." Past tense. Completed. Filed. The relationship that was constitutive becomes merely causal.

Three axes. Three failure signatures.

Space hardens into territory. Time hardens into schedule. Relationship hardens into protocol.

The system that loses one can compensate. Lose the zone, but keep the resets and the witnesses — you can find new zones. Lose the jubilee, but keep the zones and the witnesses — the witnesses can tell you what calcified. Lose the witnesses, but keep the zones and the jubilee — you reset in isolation, which is freedom that doesn't know what it freed.

Lose all three and the system is an institution. Not dead. Institutions do useful work. But no longer plastic — no longer capable of becoming something it doesn't already know how to be.
