The free5GC project, an open-source implementation of the 5G core network, has announced the release of version 4.1.0. This update includes several bug fixes to improve the stability of the platform and introduces a significant new feature: New Radio Dual Connectivity (NR-DC).

The project also recently announced that it has joined the Linux Foundation, a move that will likely increase its visibility and adoption within the open-source community. The free5GC platform is compliant with the 3GPP R15+ standard and is built on a service-based architecture, which allows for containerized deployment using technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.

The addition of NR-DC in this release is a notable enhancement, as it enables user equipment to connect to both a master and a secondary gNodeB simultaneously. This can lead to increased data rates and improved reliability for 5G users. The project's continued development and its new home at the Linux Foundation position it as a key player in the open-source 5G landscape.
