The open-source 5G core network implementation, free5GC, has officially joined the Linux Foundation. The announcement was made on September 16, 2024, at the Open Source Summit Europe in Vienna, Austria. This move is intended to provide open-source alternatives across 5G deployments.
In addition to joining the Linux Foundation, the project has also released version 4.1.0. This release includes bug fixes and a new feature: NR-DC (New Radio Dual Connectivity). The project is compliant with 3GPP R15+ standards, is modular, cloud-native, and is available under the Apache 2.0 license.
