The free5GC project, a leading open-source 5G core network, has officially joined the Linux Foundation. This move, announced in September 2024, is expected to enhance the project's governance, foster deeper collaboration within the open-source community, and accelerate the development of open 5G solutions.
Concurrent with this transition, the project has released version 4.1.0, which introduces significant improvements, including bug fixes for enhanced stability and the new NR-DC (New Radio Dual Connectivity) feature. The project continues to be a complete 5G core implementation compliant with 3GPP Release 15+ standards.
The integration with the Linux Foundation is a significant milestone for free5GC, positioning it as a critical enabler in the global 5G ecosystem. It is expected to strengthen integrations with other Linux Foundation projects like ONAP and Nephio, providing a flexible and modular 5G core solution to support network slicing, service orchestration, and automation.
