FerretDB has announced the launch of FerretDB Cloud, a managed, open-source database service that is compatible with MongoDB. The service is built on DocumentDB and is currently available on AWS. FerretDB Cloud allows developers to run document databases based on PostgreSQL while retaining features similar to MongoDB, positioning itself as an open-source alternative to proprietary database solutions like MongoDB Atlas.

The new cloud offering is designed to simplify deployment and management for developers. It features high storage capacity (up to 64 TB), encryption, and dedicated tenancy. FerretDB has also stated that it plans to expand support to multiple cloud platforms in the future. A key aspect of FerretDB Cloud is its commitment to maintaining feature parity with the on-premise version of FerretDB, which includes capabilities such as vector search.

The launch of FerretDB Cloud comes amid ongoing discussions within the database community regarding open-source licensing and market competition. By providing a managed, open-source alternative, FerretDB aims to foster a more competitive and open ecosystem for developers.
