FerretDB has announced the launch of FerretDB Cloud, a managed, open-source database service compatible with MongoDB. The service is built on PostgreSQL and is currently available on AWS, with plans for multi-cloud support.
FerretDB Cloud allows developers to run MongoDB-like workloads without the need to manage their own infrastructure. The service is positioned as an open-source alternative to proprietary managed services such as MongoDB Atlas, Azure Cosmos DB, and Amazon DocumentDB.
The launch has reignited discussions in the open-source community regarding licensing and competition, particularly in relation to MongoDB's Server Side Public License (SSPL).
