FerretDB has announced the launch of FerretDB Cloud, a managed, open-source, MongoDB-compatible database service. The service is built on PostgreSQL and is currently available on AWS, with multi-cloud support planned for the future.

FerretDB Cloud provides an open-source alternative to MongoDB Atlas, addressing concerns about vendor lock-in and the restrictive SSPL license used by MongoDB. The service offers features such as vector search, up to 64 TB of storage, and enterprise-grade SLAs.

The development of FerretDB was motivated by the desire to provide a truly open-source solution for developers who rely on the MongoDB API but are wary of its licensing. By using PostgreSQL as its backend, FerretDB aims to combine the flexibility of a document database with the robustness and open-source nature of PostgreSQL.
