The free5GC project, an open-source implementation of the 5G mobile core network, has officially joined the Linux Foundation. This move, announced in September 2024, aims to provide open-source alternatives for 5G deployments and encourage broader collaboration within the telecom industry.

In conjunction with this development, the project has released version 4.1.0. This update brings bug fixes for improved stability and introduces a new NR-DC (New Radio Dual Connectivity) feature, enhancing the network's capabilities.

free5GC is compliant with 3GPP Release 15 standards and utilizes a service-based architecture. Its containerized design allows for deployment using Kubernetes and Docker, facilitating cloud-native integration and management. The project's roadmap includes future enhancements such as support for roaming.
