Switzerland has launched 'Apertus,' a fully open-source large language model (LLM) developed by ETH Zurich, EPFL, and the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre. Available in 8B and 70B parameters, Apertus emphasizes transparency, multilingualism, and public accessibility, with its architecture, training data, and model weights openly shared. Currently accessible to Swisscom business customers via their AI platform, Apertus aims to foster innovation, strengthen Swiss AI expertise, and serve as a foundation for applications like chatbots and translation tools. Its open-source nature marks a significant contribution to the global movement toward transparent, community-driven AI development.
