Trump is promising protection to Elon Musk before Americans have even voted in the midterms. In a Pod Force One interview published Monday, he was asked about talk that Democrats might investigate the SpaceX and Tesla chief or try to seize his assets. Trump’s answer was that, if it came to that, his administration would protect him.

The Investigations

Ukraine has concrete stakes in this. Questions about who restricted Starlink service to Ukraine have drawn scrutiny beyond the Democratic Party. Musk himself has acknowledged cutting off service, citing a violation of its terms. An investigation can establish who made decisions affecting Ukrainian access, under what authority, and with what consequences. Trump is already talking about shielding Musk from that scrutiny.

The Pardons

Trump went further. If Democrats pursue investigations into his staff or other allies, he said he would consider pre-emptive pardons. Asked whether he would do it, he answered: “I would if I needed to.” Then he made the point even plainer: “I’d do it.”

A pardon would not make records disappear or stop Congress asking questions. But the president offering one in advance sends a message to everyone around him: stay loyal, and he may use his office to protect you from criminal exposure. He is floating that option before the election has settled who will control Congress.

After nearly half a billion dollars spent to help one party, the president is publicly discussing how to shield its biggest donor and his own circle from the consequences of scrutiny.

The Money

Musk has spent about $474 million opposing Democrats this election cycle. He has also suggested that a Democratic victory in the White House and Congress in 2028 would mean the end of democracy. The political investment behind Trump’s promise of protection reaches that scale.

An ugly distinction exists here. Trump did not say that any inquiry into Musk should follow the evidence wherever it leads. He said he would protect him if Democrats investigate. And he extended his remarks beyond Musk, volunteering the prospect of pardons for the people working around him.
