Russia has spent months dropping hundreds of guided bombs on the Hulialpole front, yet its ground forces remain stuck near the first villages west of the town. The October strike pattern points to a change in Moscow’s plan, not a breakthrough.
The Bombs Move West
From February through August, Russian KAB impacts were concentrated farther east. September’s strikes shifted, and October’s shifted again. The targets include Ukrainian positions in villages and treelines, with few fresh strikes on places already heavily bombed. Russia appears to be working through known defensive positions from east to west, then trying to infiltrate through the damage.
The bombing has run roughly 10 to 15 km ahead of a frontline that has barely moved. That gap matters: Russian aircraft can attack positions well beyond what Russian infantry has managed to take. A deeper impact on the map means a deeper Russian advance.
The Northern Flank
The pattern suggests Moscow has dropped its apparent plan to capture Ternuvate and redirected its effort west. Holding Ternuvate is a major Ukrainian success. Its high-rise buildings offer defenders strong positions, and the town protects the northern flank of the Russian offensive.
Ukraine’s Oleksandrivka counter-offensive has made a northward push harder still. Russian forces would have to fight on lower ground without controlling the heights. Months of bombs have not solved that problem for them.
The Road Toward Zaporizhzhia
The main Russian push now runs west from Hulialpole toward Zaporizhzhia, apparently seeking a route around Orikhiv. KABs are already falling around Ukraine’s unfinished second defensive line, even though Russian troops have not crossed the first. Moscow is trying to batter the next obstacle before it has overcome the one in front of it.
Moscow can keep moving its bombs west. It still has to get its soldiers through Ukraine’s defences.
The distinction survives its air campaign. Ukrainian forces have kept the ground front near Hulialpole largely in place, held the northern flank around Ternuvate and counterattacked near Oleksandrivka. Russian infiltrations into Orikhiv also failed; Ukrainian forces cleared the city.
