Kyiv was hit by ballistic missiles with no warning, and the explanations coming out of Washington do not hold together.
The Weather Excuse
Zelensky said Russia hit Ukraine with more than 100 drones and five ballistic missiles. He also said "there was no warning from partners." Per POLITICO, an official familiar with the matter says the Americans told Ukrainians the alert was missed because of bad weather.
Kyiv does not consider that an adequate reason. More people there are worried the real cause is something else. Zelensky's own words explain why this matters.
Warning about ballistic launches is "precisely what helps prevent people from being killed."
Those few minutes of lead time are the difference between people reaching shelter and people dying in the street.
The Press Secretary Who Could Not Answer
At Tuesday's briefing, new presidential press secretary Katie Zakariia dodged the question of whether the US had stopped sharing intelligence with Ukraine. Her answer: "I will have to get back to you."
Later the same day Trump said sharing was never halted. One simple factual question. No answer from the podium. A confirmation from the boss hours later.
That sequence is the problem. A basic yes or no on whether Ukrainian cities get launch alerts should not need a clarification from the president.
The System Has Failed Before
Air Force spokesman Yurii Ihnat did not dispute that the alert chain breaks. "Sometimes this information does not get through, and we have seen this before," he said. If there were specific technical faults this time, he expects specialists to sort it out together with partners.
Foreign Minister Sybiha stated at the Warsaw Security Forum that intelligence sharing through the platform is ongoing. Kyiv normally receives launch tip-offs via the Battlespace Command and Control Center system, which the US military and NATO members operate and control.
Why the Timing Stinks
This comes on the heels of reports that US officials phoned Ukrainian generals and threatened to cut intelligence and PURL deliveries over strikes on Russian refineries. Maybe it malfunctioned. Maybe that's a coincidence.
But the party that controls the warning system is simultaneously making threats about it. Then it fumbles the basic question of whether the system is on. Ukrainians are right not to simply take the weather story on faith.
