The Gerasimov Doctrine stopped being a think-tank curiosity years ago. That 2013 article about erasing the line between war and peace is now the daily operating manual for moscovia against the EU and NATO.
The Doctrine in Practice
The source lays it out cleanly: kinetic sabotage, economic pressure, political capture, migration weaponization, information warfare, cyber operations. All running simultaneously.
All deniable. All below the threshold that would trigger a coherent Western response.
A Deliberate Escalation
The chronology matters because it shows escalation is deliberate, not reactive.
- 2005: RT launches as a state-funded narrative machine aimed at Western audiences
- 2010s: systematic financing of political proxies and influence agents across Europe
- 2022: economic confrontation goes overt, energy blackmail included
- 2025 onward: kinetic component accelerates sharply, with sabotage, drone reconnaissance, and attacks on defense infrastructure
The drone in that photo is a real defense plant. It is the logical endpoint of a strategy that was always designed to test how much damage can be done without forcing NATO to act. And the answer so far is: quite a lot.
The Real Weakness
The European Parliament passed a resolution in September demanding hybrid attacks be recognized as a form of war and calling for a mechanism analogous to NATO Article 4. Fine.
Resolutions are cheap. What is missing is a unified European strategy, because the real weakness is not capability.
The fear is escalation. Moscow understands this perfectly.
Hybrid war works precisely because it stays below the threshold that would automatically trigger a full response.
Every burned warehouse, every hacked grid, every drone over a German airfield is calibrated to make Berlin and Brussels hesitate.
The Frontline States
Meanwhile the Baltic states and Nordics get it. They are investing in counter-sabotage, critical infrastructure protection, and anti-drone systems.
They have to. They live next door to the empire.
The 2027 Horizon
The conclusion is blunt. If the current trend holds, 2027 will be hotter.
Kinetic operations are entering full force. As long as the EU responds with statements and sanctions while avoiding real deterrence, moscovia will keep probing where the red line actually sits.
Making the hybrid campaign expensive changes the calculus: symmetric and asymmetric responses, infrastructure defense, and much deeper support for Ukraine. Europe keeps asking whether it is ready to call this war.
The better question is whether it is ready to act like it is one.
