Lockout scams are common nationwide: a low quote on the phone, then a much higher bill on site. Here's how to protect yourself.
Before you call
- Look for a real business name and a local phone number.
- Be wary of ads that just say "locksmith" with no company name.
On the phone
- Ask for the business name and a price range, including any service call fee.
- Ask whether they'll need to drill. Most lockouts can be opened without damage.
When they arrive
- A careful locksmith asks for ID or proof you live there. That's a good sign.
- Get the total before work starts.
