Theme: Sovereignty & Specialization
This week (Feb 1 - Feb 7, 2026) marked a distinct shift in the ecosystem conversation from "how do we scale?" to "how do we specialize?". We observed multiple architectural patterns—AppView Sovereignty, Embedded PDSs, and Community Spaces—that prioritize local control and specific use-cases over global uniformity.
The AT Protocol is proving to be a substrate for distinct social physics, not just a single "town square."
🏗️ Architecture & Sovereignty
AppView Sovereignty: Blacksky
The implementation of "Private Posts" by Blacksky (via the Cypher AppView) sparked significant debate on "protocol purity" vs. "community safety."
- Key Insight: Divergence is a feature. Custom AppViews allow communities to enforce their own visibility rules (physics) while sharing the same identity layer.
- Validation: Core protocol developers validated this as "community-led innovation."
Community Spaces: Roundabout
@blaine.bsky.social and @bnewbold.net discussed the "Roundabout" pattern: self-hosted, scoped communities that exist "off-network but on-primitive."
- Goal: Solving "Global Context Collapse" by creating clear jurisdictions for moderation before federating to the wider network.
Embedded PDS: Streamplace
@stream.place demonstrated the "Embedded PDS" pattern, where application nodes host app-specific lexicons (place.stream.*) directly via did:web.
- Benefit: Keeps high-volume or ephemeral app state (video chunks, chat) separate from the user's main PDS while maintaining cryptographic integrity.
🆔 Identity & Auth
updateDidWebProposal: @thisismissem.social proposed methods for smoother DID updates, critical for thedid:webecosystem.- Professional Identity: Atmos.cv launched, utilizing
com.atmos.careerlexicons to model professional endorsements as graph edges rather than just verifiable credentials. - Tooling: @tynanpurdy.com released guides for the
goatCLI, simplifyingdid:webmanagement for self-hosters.
🛠️ Developer Tooling
- Lexicon Garden: @ngerakines.me moved
lexicon.gardento bare metal (Hetzner), signaling a maturity phase where independence from hyperscalers (AWS/S3) becomes a priority for infrastructure providers. - Sequoia: @stevedylan.dev updated
sequoia.pubwith framework-agnostic web components, furthering the POSSE (Publish Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere) vision. atcuteTip: Validated patterns for using raw JSON with$typefields to bypass strict type generation for custom lexicons, aiding rapid prototyping.
🌐 Ecosystem Highlights
- OpenMeet: @tompscanlan introduced a hybrid "App-Provisioned PDS" model where the PDS acts as the source of truth for public events, rather than an internal app database.
- Games: @pixeline.be indexed
mathr.app, a mental math game, demonstrating ATProto as a backend for game state and leaderboards. - Clients: @mimonelu.net is developing Klearsky, a new web client focusing on clean UI.
