Alright, let’s talk about the “broken future” and why the world -

the world didnt stop making babies because everyone got addicted to netflix and forgot how plumbing works. its way messier, way funnier, and way more tragic than any doomer meme or kremlin bedtime story. so lets break down why the birth rate fell off a cliff everywhere, and why the only thing multiplying in ruzzia is the number of excuses.

Demographic Crisis: Not Your Grandpa’s Apocalypse

everyone loves to scream about the “demographic crisis” like its zombies at the door, but hospitals are open, people live longer, and maternity wards arent nightclubs yet. then 2026 hits, and suddenly birth rates nosedive across the planet. not just in the “decadent west” that kremlin tv loves to roast, but everywhere from sweden to south korea.

russian propaganda will tell you its all the wests fault, or maybe “gay parades” did it, or some other fever dream. reality is way more complicated and honestly, way more interesting. the receipts are brutal and nobody gets to walk away clean.

The Money Myth: Who’s Actually Having Kids

remember when people said “the poor have more kids”? yeah, that meme is dead. in the rich world, the script flipped hard. in sweden, norway, the netherlands, italy—if you’re rich, you’re more likely to have kids. in sweden, rich men and women are out-breeding their broke neighbors. in norway, high-earning women are the baby champs. in italy and the netherlands, if both partners are stacking cash, odds are they’re parents. if you’re broke, you’re probably child-free, not by choice, but because life’s a grind.

this isnt just europe. studies in the us, uk, germany, australia all say the same: more money, more babies. the old “poor breed like rabbits” line is as outdated as a lada with a carburetor. in the rich world, being broke means you’re less likely to have kids, not more.

Education, Hustle, and the Great Delay

so is it just about money? not quite. education gets blamed a lot. the more women get degrees and careers, the later they have kids—if at all. but economists dug into 30 years of american data and found that education matters, but it’s not the whole story. even as women got more degrees and better jobs, family size kept shrinking. it’s not just “career over kids.” the system makes it damn near impossible to have both.

men arent off the hook. guys with better jobs and more cash are more likely to become dads. if you’re stuck in gig economy hell or juggling three jobs to pay rent, starting a family is a joke. the game is rigged so only the winners get to play house.

Taiwan: Microchips Make More Babies Than the Government

taiwan is wild. lowest birth rate on earth, even beat south korea for the “least likely to have a baby” trophy. but tsmc, the microchip giant, employs just 0.3% of taiwan’s population, yet their workers are responsible for almost 2% of all births. every 50th baby is born to a tsmc family. why? because the company pays well, offers stability, and actually gives a damn about its workers. turns out, people have kids when they’re not terrified about the future.

Ukraine: War, Peace, and the Vanishing Generation

ukraine is demographic crisis on hard mode. peaked at over 52 million in 1993, now it’s been downhill ever since. war didnt start the problem, it just floored the gas. people are getting married later—average age is pushing 30. every year since 1993, more people die than are born. in some regions, for every baby, two people die. kyiv is the only place keeping the lights on, with every ninth ukrainian baby born there. even kyiv’s death rate jumped 11% this year.

the “just have more kids” crowd is delusional. only 21% of ukrainians plan to have a child soon. another 26% are putting it off, probably waiting for the next air raid to end or the next mobilization round to skip their street. the rest? not even thinking about it.

War Didn’t Break It, But It Sure Didn’t Help

war didnt invent ukraine’s baby bust, but it made it a hell of a lot worse. when your country’s getting shelled, the economy’s in shambles, and half your friends are at the front or in poland, starting a family is not on the to-do list. it’s not just fear, it’s about stability. people need to feel like they’re not alone, that there’s a community, some support, maybe even a future. in western ukraine, where protestant families have tight-knit communities, birth rates are higher—not just because of faith, but because people feel like someone’s got their back.

The Rural Dream: Land, Houses, and the Village Baby Boom Myth

there’s this fantasy that if you give people a house and a plot of land, they’ll start cranking out kids like it’s 1950. ukraine’s got the land—huge territory, low population density. and yeah, people with a house and some stability do have a few more kids. but it’s not enough. unless you build real infrastructure—roads, schools, jobs—nobody’s moving out to the sticks just to raise a family. you can’t uber eats a future.

The Global Panic Button: From Too Many to Not Enough

for decades, everyone freaked out about overpopulation. governments sterilized people, banned babies, handed out fines for having too many kids. now, the panic’s flipped: what if there aren’t enough people? turning off the baby machine is way easier than turning it back on. once people get used to smaller families, more freedom, and not living in fear of the next famine, you can’t just bribe them with a baby bonus and expect a population boom.

The Russian Spin: Cope Olympics

kremlin’s take is always “the west is dying out, russia is strong, we’ll outbreed them all!” meanwhile, russia’s own birth rate is in freefall, population’s shrinking faster than the ruble, and the only thing multiplying is the number of excuses. they’ll blame “decadence,” “liberalism,” or whatever new western boogeyman they invent this week. but the receipts don’t lie. russia’s got the same problem as everyone else, just with more vodka and fewer working toilets.

the only thing multiplying in russia is the number of excuses

Why Did the World Stop Having Kids?

here’s the short version:

Ukraine’s Existential Problem

for ukraine, this is existential. you can’t rebuild a country if there’s nobody left to do the building. the war made everything worse, but the rot started decades ago. if you want people to have kids, you need to give them a reason to believe in tomorrow. that means peace, jobs, homes, and a sense of community. not just in kyiv, not just for the rich, but everywhere.

maybe ukraine needs to rethink the “everyone in the city” model. build up the suburbs, connect the villages, make it possible to live outside the capital without feeling like you’re on a different planet. but that takes real investment, not just another government program with a catchy slogan.

The World’s Not Ending, But It’s Getting Weird

is this the end of humanity? nah. but it’s the end of the world as we knew it. the old rules are dead. the new ones? still being written. maybe we’ll see more countries copying the tsmc model—good jobs, real support, and a future worth betting on. maybe we’ll see more people choosing to live alone, or in smaller families, or not at all. that’s not a tragedy. it’s just reality.

but if you’re waiting for some magical turnaround, dont hold your breath. you can’t propaganda your way out of a demographic crisis. you can’t bomb your way to a baby boom. and you sure as hell can’t meme your way to a future if nobody’s left to laugh at the joke.

so next time you hear some z blogger rant about “the west dying out” while their own country’s birth rate is circling the drain, just remember: the only thing multiplying in russia is the number of excuses. the rest of us? we’re just trying to survive the broken future, one day at a time. and if you want more babies, maybe start by giving people a reason to believe in tomorrow. otherwise, all you’re left with is cope—and i’ve got enough of that in my collection to last a lifetime.

russian tv: the west is dying out. russian reality: the only thing being born is another excuse.
