Ben Hodges: Russia’s Size Is a Vulnerability Now.

russian size used to be the flex, now its just a giant leaky roof and ukraine figured out how to rain on every square meter. napoleon froze, hitler starved, but now its 2024 and the only thing retreating is the myth. vatniks spit out their mushroom tea every time someone points out the obvious: you cant defend what you cant even reach, and ukraine’s drones got more range than a kremlin press release.

depth is not defense when your air defense is a meme

ukraine’s not just trolling belgorod for the lulz, theyre sending drones 3,000 km into the arctic and lighting up gas plants in yamal. thats moscow to the north pole plus a pit stop at a lada graveyard. the old “depth is our defense” trick only works if you got something to defend it with. russia’s got more territory than working air defense, and ukraine’s got more range than a z blogger’s imagination.

every time the kremlin shifts an s-400 to cover a new hole, ukraine hits somewhere else. its like watching a drunk octopus try to plug holes in a sinking submarine. the regime’s playing whack-a-mole with no moles, just holes and excuses. the only thing getting covered is the state’s ass, and even that’s got leaks.

the old russian flex was “come freeze in our forests,” now its “please dont bomb our gas plant, we moved the last missile battery to moscow.”

the real targets: war machine and wallet

ukraine’s not just flexing for the headlines, theyre hitting the stuff that keeps the russian war machine running. oil refineries, gas plants, logistics hubs, wildberries and ozon warehouses. every drone strike is less diesel for tanks, less cash for missiles, more angry truckers in the comments blaming iran because fox news told them to.

wildberries and ozon are basically russian amazon, moving everything from body armor to drones straight to the front. ukraine’s burned down over 20 of these in a few months. thats not a supply chain issue, thats a logistics aneurysm. you can draft all the conscripts you want, but if you cant get them boots or a working rifle, you’re just sending them to the world’s worst camping trip.

kremlin denial is the only thing in surplus

putin says “no mobilization planned,” which is kremlin for “mobilization next week.” last time they tried, half the country ran for the border, the other half googled “how to break your own leg.” the front’s bleeding men and gear, and the only thing theyre producing faster than casualties is excuses.

the “second army of the world” line is a vodka napkin slogan. twelve years in, russia controls less than a fifth of ukraine. all that size, all those resources, and theyre getting clowned by a country that crowdfunded its first batch of drones. the only thing russia’s winning is the race to turn a superpower into a meme.

size is an economic curse now

every refinery or gas plant that goes up in smoke is billions gone. the ruble’s doing the harlem shake, and the regime’s gotta pick: defend oil profits or defend moscow. spoiler, they cant do both. sanctions didnt collapse the economy overnight, but they turned “import substitution” into a punchline and “made in russia” into a warning label.

babushkas get to watch their pension shrink while wildberries stocks nothing but z shirts and used washing machines. every new ukrainian strike means the regime’s got to explain why the only thing left to buy is cope.

nuclear blackmail is just noise now

kremlin’s still trying the old “dont make us angry or we’ll do something crazy” routine. bro, you cant even keep your own gas plants from exploding. the only thing you’re nuking is your own economy. every time you threaten the world, you get two dead conscripts and a sternly worded letter from the un. the west’s finally clocking that russia’s “red lines” are just suggestions, and ukraine’s crossing them with style.

the system’s rotten and everyone knows it

the regime’s biggest export isn’t oil or gas, it’s excuses. every problem is nato’s fault, or ukraine’s, or the weather, or the gays, or whatever the talking point of the week is. meanwhile, the real problems—corruption, brain drain, poverty, a military that cant win without cheating—just keep getting worse. the russian dream is a lada that starts and a neighbor poorer than you. that’s not a strategy, that’s a coping mechanism.

z bloggers are out here drawing new lines on the map, declaring victory in places they cant even pronounce, while the front line keeps moving the wrong way. its like watching a guy livestream his own bankruptcy and call it a business seminar. the regime launders war crimes through state tv, but the stains keep showing up in the un reports. you cant bleach reality forever, no matter how many times you change the channel.

the west is slow but finally catching on

the us is busy eating itself alive with culture wars and “both sides” brainworms. congress is asleep, the pentagon’s firing generals like its a reality show, and the president’s blaming ukraine for gas prices while his own policies started half the fires. meanwhile, the only people actually doing their jobs are the ukrainians, fighting for their lives while the rest of us argue about pronouns and tiktok bans.

kremlin’s favorite hobby is hybrid attacks—drones on german airports, rockets in poland, cyberattacks on anything that moves. the goal isn’t to win, its to make everyone else too tired to fight back. but the more russia pushes, the more europe wakes up. germany’s finally admitting russia’s behind the attacks, even if their response is slower than a russian tank in mud season. the “grey zone” is shrinking, and every time ukraine lands a punch, it gets smaller.

us logic: blame ukraine, ignore your own mess

the administration’s out here demanding ukraine stop hitting russian oil infrastructure because american diesel is expensive. meanwhile, the president’s started a war with iran, oil’s $106 a barrel, but sure, lets blame kyiv. the logic is so backwards its practically a yoga pose. and while ukraine’s fighting for survival, the white house is sending realtors to negotiate peace deals. kushner and vitkoff think geopolitics is monopoly with more zeroes. the only thing missing is a “do not pass go, go directly to the hague” card.

if you want to see how deep the rot goes, look at the trump jr. wedding. russian oligarch pays for the whole thing—private islands, fireworks, the works. the guy’s on ukrainian sanctions lists for kidnapping kids, but hey, he throws a good party. us president’s response? shrug emoji. if you pay for the orchestra, you pick the music. in this case, the music is “please repeat kremlin talking points and pretend its patriotism.” the only thing more embarrassing than letting a russian oligarch pay for your kid’s wedding is pretending its normal.

ukraine’s resilience is the real flex

ukraine’s teaching the world a masterclass in resilience. getting bombed, frozen, starved, and still making memes and building drones in their garages. hodges is right to be ashamed the us isn’t matching that spirit. the only thing more powerful than a ukrainian with a soldering iron is a ukrainian grandma with a grudge. the regime cant kill that, no matter how many missiles they launch.

the empire’s naked, and everyone’s watching

russia’s size isn’t a flex anymore, its a liability. every extra kilometer is another hole to plug, another target to defend, another headache for a regime running on fumes and propaganda. ukraine’s figured out how to turn that size against them, and the west is finally starting to get the memo. the kremlin can keep screaming about red lines and nato conspiracies, but they’re just another empire bleeding out in slow motion, too proud to admit they’re losing to a country they said would fall in three days.

the only thing russia’s got left is the smell, and even that’s starting to fade. ukraine will win, not because they’re bigger or richer, but because they’re smarter, faster, and a hell of a lot more stubborn. the regime can keep robbing its people blind and calling it patriotism, but the receipts are piling up, and the world’s not buying the act anymore.

so yeah, ben hodges is right. russia’s size is a vulnerability now. every time a drone lands where it shouldn’t, every time a refinery goes up in smoke, every time a z blogger has to redraw the map, that vulnerability gets a little bigger. the empire’s naked, and ukraine’s the one holding up the mirror. all that’s left is for the rest of us to stop pretending we don’t see it.

russian victory maps get more cardio than their conscripts. every week a new line, every month a new excuse. empire speedrun to meme status, and they still think size matters.
