day 1667 and the only thing running smoother than kremlin excuses is the line at the gas station. fuel crisis, sanctions, ukraine still pushing, regions broke as hell, and the vibes are about as immaculate as a soviet toilet. lets take a tour of the latest russian cope parade.
fuel crisis: energy superpower, no gas
so the worlds “energy superpower” ran out of gas. congrats, you already beat half of russian state tv at basic math. drone strikes been turning refineries into bonfire night for months, and now the shelves are bare. production of auto gasoline dropped to 70% by late august, and that was before the latest refinery bbq. perm, yaroslavl, leningrad, nizhny novgorod, all either shut or limping. result? no gas in saratov, penza, tyumen, surgut. tyumen is supposed to be the oil and gas capital. imagine texas running out of gas, but nobody even pretends its temporary.
lines at the pump are back, stretching for kilometers. in some places, you gotta drive 50 km just to find a station that isnt dry. and when you get there, hope you got a fuel card or a friend at lukoil, cause cash is just paper now. the government keeps promising the situation is “stabilizing,” which in russian means “we have no idea, please stop asking.” 53 regions and counting with empty tanks. even tractors are parked, tow trucks on vacation, nothing to tow and nowhere to tow it.
every crisis is a paperwork party. some regions tried to cap how much fuel you could buy, then quietly dropped the limits when it turned out nobody had any fuel to sell anyway. omsk was first to scrap rationing, but that didnt make gas appear. the only thing more rationed than fuel is the truth.
sanctions: import substitution, now with extra cope
new sanctions wave incoming, and the kremlin is sweating like a conscript at the draft office. the west is tightening the screws, especially on oil exports and tech imports. “import substitution” is still the official religion, but the only thing theyve substituted is hope with despair. every time a new round of sanctions drops, the regime promises a “breakthrough,” and every time, the only thing breaking through is the bottom of the budget.
the ruble is in freefall, the central bank is playing whack-a-mole with inflation, and the only thing holding up the economy is the collective denial of everyone on state tv. the regime is addicted to its own bullshit and the only thing they export now is excuses.
- oil exports down
- tech imports blocked
- ruble tanking
- inflation up
- budget holes everywhere
the only thing more stable than the ruble is the kremlins ability to blame someone else.
ukraine: still rolling, z bloggers still coping
ukraines offensive is still cooking. the front line under lyman is a meat grinder for russian troops, and every time a z blogger yells “ukraine is finished,” the map gets a little more blue and a little less z. russian army’s big innovation this month is losing ships in novorossiysk and pretending its all part of the plan.
the kremlins answer? more mobilization rumors, more “partial” drafts, more guys getting a letter and a one-way ticket to the worlds worst camping trip. the only thing more voluntary than russian mobilization is a mugging. every week, some talking head promises a “turning point,” a “new strategy,” or my personal favorite, “the enemy is on the verge of collapse.” meanwhile, the only thing collapsing is the russian standard of living.
the only thing scarier than russian nukes is the idea that the same guys who cant keep gas in tyumen are in charge of the launch codes.
regions: broke, busted, and out of excuses
while moscow burns money on the war, the regions are left holding the bag. budgets are drying up faster than a vatniks sense of humor. social programs? cut. infrastructure? rotting. salaries? delayed or “optimized,” which is russian for “good luck, comrade.” even the propaganda machine is running on fumes.
local officials are too busy explaining why theres no gas, no money, and no future to bother with the usual “everything is fine” routine. the only thing they can still afford is a new statue of some dead tsar and a fresh batch of excuses. the only thing more common than potholes is the phrase “temporary difficulties.”
- social programs cut
- infrastructure neglected
- salaries delayed or “optimized”
- propaganda on life support
the regions are scraping the bottom of the barrel, and the only thing left is the barrel.
public mood: numb is the new normal
heres the real kicker: the russian public is getting used to it. latest levada poll says the number of people feeling “tension, irritation, fear, or sadness” is actually going down. not cause things are getting better, but cause everyones numb. when you spend two years being told “victory is just around the corner” while your lada sits empty and your fridge is full of nothing, you either laugh or you go nuts.
most people are choosing to laugh, or at least pretend nothings wrong. its not resilience, its learned helplessness with a side of stockholm syndrome. the regime’s answer? blame the west, blame ukraine, blame the weather, blame anyone except the guys actually running the show.
when your main export is excuses and your main import is chinese microwaves, you’re not exactly winning.
what’s next: more of the same, but worse
so whats next? more of the same, but worse. the fuel crisis isnt going anywhere unless ukraine stops turning refineries into swiss cheese, and that aint happening. sanctions will keep biting, the ruble will keep tanking, and the regions will keep begging moscow for scraps. the army will keep losing ground, and the propaganda will keep insisting its all part of the plan. the only thing that might change is how many people are willing to pretend they believe it.
in the end, russias biggest problem isnt the west, or ukraine, or even the sanctions. its the regimes addiction to its own bullshit. you cant fix a fuel crisis with a tv speech, you cant win a war with a parade, and you cant run a country on vibes and nostalgia. but as long as theres one guy left with a working lada and a neighbor poorer than him, the russian dream lives on. just dont ask him to drive anywhere.
russian energy superpower update: you can fill your tank with propaganda, but it wont get you to work.
