Russia’s size used to be the punchline to every “invincible empire” joke.

russian size used to be the punchline, now its just the punchline’s corpse. mongols, napoleon, hitler all got eaten by the map, but now that big-ass map is just a dartboard and ukraine’s got the darts. hodges is right, the thing russians brag about most is now the thing killing them. too big to fail? nah, too big to cover with your sad leftover soviet air defense.

the dartboard empire

ukraine’s not just poking border towns, they’re sending drones 3000 km into the arctic and lighting up gas plants like it’s new years. that’s not a flex, that’s a humiliation speedrun. russia’s air defense is so thin they’re basically playing whack-a-mole with a single mallet and a hangover. you cant cover a country that stretches across 11 time zones when half your s-400s are busy protecting putin’s dacha and the other half are for sale on avito.

back in the day, russia’s size meant you could lose a million guys and just keep shoveling more bodies into the grinder. now it means you’ve got a million kilometers of pipeline, warehouse, and ammo dump for ukraine to blow up while your generals are busy photoshopping victory arrows on telegram. the “second army of the world” is now the second army of “please stop burning our amazon knockoff warehouses.”

the best part? every time ukraine hits another oil refinery, russian tv goes full “it’s fine, we never needed that anyway.” meanwhile, diesel’s through the roof, and the only thing moving faster than the price of gas is the speed at which russian officials deny there’s a problem. putin’s out here promising new miracle weapons while the only thing he’s actually producing is more orphans and a new generation of guys who think a working toilet is western decadence.

logistics, but make it tragic

russia’s logistics are a meme. wildberries and ozon, their wannabe amazon and ebay, just got turned into bonfire night by ukrainian drones. these are the same warehouses that were supposed to make russia “modern.” instead, they’re full of melted plastic and burnt-out knockoff chinese drones. you know you’re losing when your biggest military innovation is a telegram channel begging for more socks.

on the front lines, hodges points out that russia’s big “encirclement” plan in donbas is basically dead. their whole “fortress belt” strategy, surround sloviansk, kramatorsk, all that, got clapped because they can’t cross a river without losing half their gear to mud and the other half to himars. russian milbloggers are updating their maps so fast they’re gonna get carpal tunnel. every “advance” is just a new way to spell “retreat” with more cope.

the kremlin’s terrified of mobilization. they know the second they announce another wave, half the country’s gonna sprint for the border or start setting recruitment offices on fire again. putin and medvedev keep denying it, which in russia means it’s probably happening next week. the regime’s so desperate they’re praying for a nato “provocation” just so they can blame someone else for their own shitshow.

choke points and clown shows

ukraine’s not just blowing stuff up for the hell of it, they’re choking russia’s war machine at the source. no fuel, no trucks, no army. you can have a million conscripts, but if they’re walking to the front with no ammo and eating cold potatoes, you’re not winning anything except a darwin award.

meanwhile, the international clown show is in full swing. the us is busy firing generals like it’s a reality show, with trump and his gym bro defense secretary more worried about “woke” than about actual war. congress is asleep at the wheel, and the only people negotiating with russia are two real estate guys who think ukraine is just a fixer-upper with a good view. trump jr. is out here getting his wedding paid for by a russian oligarch who can’t even spell “sanctions,” and nobody in dc seems to care. if you ever wondered what it looks like when a superpower gets run like a sketchy hoa, this is it.

hodges is straight up embarrassed. he’s got ukrainian friends freezing in the dark, still fighting, still not giving up, and the us is out here acting like the world’s biggest banana republic. the only thing more corrupt than the kremlin right now is the american political class, and even they’re not as good at hiding it. at least in russia, they don’t bother pretending.

putin’s chaos export

all this chaos, all this dysfunction, is exactly what putin wants. he’s been playing the west for years, pumping money into every far-right, pro-kremlin party he can find. afd in germany, le pen in france, reform in the uk, even the polish president picking fights with ukraine just to look tough. the goal? break western unity, get everyone fighting each other, and hope nobody notices russia’s army is mostly guys who got drafted because they lost a bet.

and it’s working, sort of. the us is so busy fighting itself that it can’t even keep ambassadors in ukraine or russia. the only thing more absent than american leadership is a working russian tank. europe’s waking up, but slowly. every time russia pulls a “gray zone” attack, drone hits in germany, rockets in poland, the response is a stern letter and maybe a new round of sanctions that get ignored by tuesday.

meanwhile, ukraine’s just getting better. every new drone strike, every burnt-out warehouse, every oil fire in the arctic is proof that russia’s size is now a curse, not a blessing. you can’t defend everything, and the more you try, the more you spread yourself thin. it’s like trying to plug holes in a sinking ship with your bare hands while the crew’s busy stealing the lifeboats.

the russian dream, now with extra cope

the russian people? stuck in the middle, getting robbed blind by a regime that tells them everything’s fine while the country falls apart. the only thing the kremlin exports faster than oil is its own citizens running for the exit. the russian dream is a lada that starts, a neighbor poorer than you, and a tv that swears the potato shortage is a nato plot. meanwhile, the real “special operation” is figuring out how to keep the lights on and the vodka flowing.

so yeah, russia’s size is a vulnerability now. the empire that used to swallow invaders whole is getting eaten from the inside out, one drone strike at a time. ukraine’s not just fighting for survival, they’re rewriting the rules. the old “depth defense” is dead. now it’s “depth target practice,” and russia’s giving them plenty to shoot at.

the only thing “deep” about russia now is the hole they’re digging for themselves.

the kremlin still thinks they’re winning. every week it’s a new threat, a new “red line,” a new promise to nuke someone if they don’t get their way. but all they deliver is two dead conscripts and a washing machine stolen from a bombed-out village. the only thing more radioactive than their threats is the fallout from their own incompetence.

the west? still stuck in the group chat, arguing about who’s to blame for the mess while ukraine does all the heavy lifting. the us can’t decide if it wants to be the arsenal of democracy or just another banana republic with nukes. europe’s finally getting the memo, but it took a few drone strikes in leipzig to wake them up.

hodges is right: the map that used to save russia is now the map that’s killing it. you can’t air defense your way out of geography, and you can’t propaganda your way out of getting clowned by a country you said would fall in three days.

so next time you see a vatnik bragging about how “no one can conquer russia,” just remind them: nobody has to. ukraine’s already inside, and the only thing getting conquered is their amazon knockoff warehouse. the empire’s too big to save, too corrupt to fix, and too broke to matter. all that’s left is the cope, and trust me, i’m collecting it by the bucket.
