“Dead season” in Russia isn’t just a mood, it’s an entire election

russian elections are just a dead season with paperwork, not a mood, a whole lifestyle. every september the kremlin drags out the same busted circus tent, calls it “democracy,” and expects you to clap while the same clowns juggle rubber ballots. this year its duma, governors, local deputies, whatever, but the only real contest is who can look the most bored on tv.

nobody cares, not even the regime

lets be real, nobody in russia gives a shit about these elections. not the voters, not the parties, not even the regime’s own talking heads. their own polls say two-thirds of russians dont even know when the elections are. the political process is so dead you’d need a necromancer just to get a pulse. campaign “debates” are a joke, like when a communist tried to challenge a united russia hack and the broadcast just cut to a random news segment. peak democracy, right there.

campaigning is now so risky the safest move is to sing neutral songs and hope nobody notices you exist. not a joke, thats literally what the communists are doing. the closer it gets to election day, the fewer russians even pretend they’ll show up. the only thing that gets people out of their apartments is a drone strike or a new round of mobilization rumors.

belgorod and the growing hate list

take belgorod. locals there arent just checked out, theyre pissed. they call united russia the “party of war, hunger, poverty, death, and murder.” they want the war to stop, not another round of fake voting. and theyre not alone. the regime’s base is shrinking, and the only thing growing is the list of reasons to hate the system: internet blackouts, price hikes, the threat of being snatched for the front, and drones buzzing overhead like angry wasps.

nobody’s buying the act anymore. the regime’s own voters are sick of it, and the only thing that gets bigger every year is the pile of reasons to bail. you want to know what motivates people now? not getting drafted, not getting their bank accounts frozen, not getting their doors kicked in at 6am.

zombie parade elections

lets not act like this is some new low. russian elections have been a zombie parade for years. the duma vote drags on for three days, not because anyone needs that long, but so the regime can “find” the right result. no real debates, no real choice, just a menu of pre-approved losers and the same old faces. the only thing less legit than this duma is the “voting” at gunpoint in occupied ukraine, where masked men with see-through ballot boxes go door to door making sure everyone “participates.” nothing says “free and fair” like an ak-47 in your living room.

even the kremlin’s own spin doctors have stopped pretending. these elections arent about mobilizing the country or getting a mandate. theyre just referendums on whether the regime can keep faking it for another year. the only thing putin wants is a photo op and a headline: “the people support the war.” never mind that the only thing most russians support is not getting drafted or having their bank accounts frozen.

the only thing more lifeless than the ballot boxes is the campaign debate

mobilization and the new squeeze

speaking of mobilization, the regime’s got a fresh batch of tricks lined up for after the vote. theyre prepping new restrictions: travel bans, blocked bank accounts, no loans, no property deals, anything to squeeze more bodies for the meat grinder. the next wave of mobilization is basically a done deal, just waiting for the last ballot to be “counted.” if you thought the last round was ugly, wait until they start yanking people off the street for missing a payment or trying to leave the country.

meanwhile, the budget’s in freefall. bloomberg says the kremlin’s been on an austerity bender since april, slashing spending and pinching pennies like a babushka at the market. the war’s eating everything: money, people, whatever’s left of the country’s future. the only thing the regime’s investing in is more drones, more cops, and more ways to keep the lights on in the propaganda studio.

no alternatives, just more collapse

lets talk about the “alternatives” on offer. there arent any. the regime’s whole pitch is “vote for us or the war gets worse.” but the war is already getting worse, every single month. more people come home in boxes, more money disappears, the elite gets nastier, the population gets poorer, and the hole gets deeper. theres no off-ramp, no plan b, just a slow-motion collapse that nobody can explain away once the emergency ends.

putin’s big idea is that as long as the war drags on, he can keep the lid on. but hes missing the obvious: the longer this goes, the faster everything falls apart. the regime’s running out of time, out of cash, and out of excuses. the only thing theyve got left is the threat of force and the hope that nobody notices the emperor’s got no clothes.

occupied territories: elections at gunpoint

lets not forget the occupied territories. the kremlin’s holding “elections” there too, under the watchful eye of guys with guns and a script from moscow. zelensky told ukrainians not to participate, and for good reason: every vote is just another prop in the kremlin’s theater. the only thing less legitimate than these ballots is the idea that anyone on those territories actually wants to be part of russia. participation isnt democracy, its hostage-taking with paperwork.

the “voting” in occupied ukraine is just cosplay for the cameras. masked men, see-through ballot boxes, and a lot of nervous silence. the only thing theyre counting is how many people are too scared to say no.

propaganda reruns and the cringe congress

the propaganda machine is still running, but its sputtering. every cycle, its the same rerun: deny, deflect, distract, declare victory, repeat. the actors get worse, the script gets lazier, and the audience is mostly just doomscrolling for the next meme. the regime’s biggest export isnt oil or gas anymore, its excuses: why nothing ever gets better, why the graves keep filling up, why the only thing that changes is the price of bread and the color of the ballot box.

the united russia party congress this year was a masterclass in cringe. putin stood up in the megasport palace and promised the elections would be “open and honest, in strict accordance with the law.” sure, vlad. the only thing stricter than the law is the security at the door, making sure nobody with a real question gets in. the only thing “open” is the bar tab for the party hacks.

tech paranoia and the last connection

lets not forget the tech angle. the regime’s so paranoid about losing control, theyre handing out drones and fiber optic spools to their “watchdogs,” just in case anyone gets ideas about actual oversight. meanwhile, starlink’s gone from the front, and the only thing connecting russians to the outside world is a vpn and a prayer.

the kremlin’s idea of transparency is a drone in every polling station and a cop in every stairwell. the only thing more surveilled than the ballot boxes is the wifi.

the endgame: inertia and fear

so whats the endgame? after the ballots are burned and the numbers are cooked, the regime will declare victory, pat itself on the back, and get ready for the next round of mobilization. the duma will rubber-stamp whatever comes next, and the propaganda machine will crank out another season of “everything is fine, keep calm and carry on.” but the cracks are showing. the base is restless, the elite is nervous, and the only thing holding it all together is inertia and fear.

the real story isnt who wins the vote, its who doesnt bother to show up. the dead season isnt just about elections, its about a country thats checked out, tuned out, and waiting for something to change. the regime can fake the numbers, but it cant fake the vibe. when the only people excited about voting are the ones getting paid to count the ballots, you know the game’s up.

so yeah, russia’s “elections” are a joke, but the punchline’s getting old. the regime’s running on fumes, the people are running out of patience, and the only thing left to export is more cope and more bodies. the circus will roll on, but the tent’s full of holes and the clowns are starting to look scared. tick tock, vlad. the dead season doesnt last forever.

russian democracy: now with 30 percent more necromancy, 50 percent less pulse, and 100 percent guaranteed to bore you to death before the regime does.
