Alright, let’s talk about the naked emperor in the room.

putin’s whole regime is just cosplay at this point, and the only thing holding the costume together is hope nobody blinks too hard. the kremlin’s big export isn’t oil or gas anymore, it’s the myth that putin’s got it all under control. spoiler: he doesn’t, and everyone inside the palace knows it.

the myth of stability

for years, the kremlin’s main hustle was selling “order” to anyone who’d buy it. putin’s pitch: stick with me, you get stability, predictability, and maybe a slice of the pie if you clap loud enough. that kept the oligarchs fat, the siloviki happy, and the technocrats pretending to care.

now the cracks are showing. the war was supposed to be a flex, a quick “special operation” to show who’s boss. instead, it’s a meat grinder chewing up conscripts, budgets, and whatever’s left of russia’s reputation. the front line is stuck, sanctions are biting, and the only thing growing is the list of people sprinting for the border.

the regime’s running on fumes, and the only thing keeping the ceiling up is the hope nobody looks up. the “everyone’s on board” routine is just for export, like those rusty tanks they keep sending to the front.

palace knife fight

inside the kremlin, it’s not unity, it’s a knife fight with bad lighting. the new york times calls it a secret war, but it’s only secret if you don’t speak kremlin. on one side, you’ve got the fsb and the old-school security goons. their whole vibe: keep people in the dark, scare the ones who know too much, smash anything that moves.

they don’t care if the economy tanks or if the internet turns into a digital riot, as long as they can pull the plug and keep the lights on in their own offices. on the other side, you’ve got the technocrats, the spreadsheet guys who actually have to make the numbers add up so the regime doesn’t collapse under its own bullshit.

the technocrats aren’t patriots, they’re just allergic to chaos because it’s bad for business. they see the anger simmering online, the memes, the leaks, the little acts of sabotage, and they know if you squeeze too hard, something’s gonna pop. they’re not dreaming of a free russia, they just don’t want to end up living in north korea with better vodka.

neither side trusts the other, and both are starting to realize the guy at the top isn’t steering the ship anymore. putin’s not the puppet master, he’s the puppet with the most strings attached.

digital sovereignty, russian edition

russia’s “digital sovereignty” is a potemkin village built on chinese chips and wishful thinking. their ai models are a joke, running on hardware they had to beg from beijing because they can’t make their own. herman gref, the sberbank guy, literally went to china with his hat in his hand asking for chips so they could keep pretending they’re a tech power.

the fsb couldn’t care less. their idea of digital transformation is a bigger off switch and more guys in balaclavas. the technocrats know this is a dead end, but what are they gonna do, argue with the guys who have the guns?

the kremlin’s tech plan is basically:

meanwhile, the smart kids are fleeing to tbilisi or berlin, and the only thing the regime can code is a new blacklist.

the myth falls apart

putin’s whole system is built on the idea that he’s the only adult in the room, the only one who can balance the clans, keep the money flowing, and stop the whole thing from blowing up. but now, with the war dragging on, the economy in the toilet, and the elites at each other’s throats, that myth is falling apart.

the duma elections are coming up, and for the first time in forever, the regime is actually nervous. not because they’re afraid of losing, nobody believes in fair elections anyway, but because they’re afraid of what happens if the turnout is too low, if the wrong people get too bold, if the cracks in the system get too wide to paper over.

to keep the war going, they’re gonna have to mobilize again. doesn’t matter how they spin it, doesn’t matter how many times they say “voluntary,” everyone knows what’s coming. more bodies for the front, more families pissed off, more people looking for a way out. the budget’s a joke, the ruble’s a meme, and the only thing the regime can promise is more of the same.

putin’s not the master of the game anymore, he’s just the last guy who hasn’t realized the game’s over.

elite panic and propaganda autopilot

the elites see it. they’re not stupid. they know putin’s not in control, they just can’t say it out loud. some are hedging their bets, moving money offshore, getting their kids foreign passports. some are trying to cozy up to the siloviki, hoping brute force will keep them safe. some are just waiting, watching, hoping someone else makes the first move.

nobody wants to be the first to jump, but nobody wants to be the last rat on the sinking ship either. meanwhile, the propaganda machine is running on autopilot. every week it’s the same script: deny the losses, blame the west, declare victory, rinse and repeat.

even the z bloggers, the regime’s own pet trolls, are starting to sound tired. they scream about “traitors” and “fifth columns,” but half the time they’re just subtweeting each other. the only thing they agree on is that things are bad and getting worse, but nobody’s allowed to say why.

the regime still thinks it can scare the world with nuclear blackmail and fake referendums. like anyone outside the telegram bubble is buying it. the only thing more radioactive than their threats is the fallout from their own incompetence.

the naked emperor special

so yeah, the emperor’s naked. the only people pretending otherwise are the ones who can’t afford to admit they see it. the rest are just waiting for the next act, hoping the roof doesn’t cave in before they can grab their loot and run.

if you’re still buying the “stable russia” line, i’ve got a bridge in crimea to sell you. cheap. just don’t ask about the warranty.

russian state tv: we are the fortress of stability. russian reality: the only thing stable is the smell.
