Let’s talk about the naked emperor in the room.

the only thing more transparent than putins regime is his pants, and even the palace staff are tired of pretending not to look. the kremlin is running the worlds saddest reality show, and the only thing keeping the set from collapsing is fsb paranoia and a bunch of yes-men hoping not to be next out the window.

the illusion of control

for twenty years, putins main export wasnt oil or gas, it was the vibe that hes got it all handled. the pitch was simple: russia is stable, the elites are loyal, the people are with me, the war is popular, the system is tight. didnt matter if the ruble was worth less than a stick of gum, as long as everyone bought the story, the circus kept spinning.

but now, the only ones still pretending to believe are the ones who have to. everyone else is just playing along because the alternative is scarier. the kremlin is less a fortress and more a snake pit with wifi. fsb guys think you can run a country by making sure nobody knows shit and everyone who does is too scared to talk. the technocrats, the ones who actually want working internet and a functioning economy, are looking at the fsb like, bro, you cant just unplug the country and call it governance. nobody is loyal, theyre just hostages with linkedin profiles.

the only thing putin is controlling is the thermostat in his bunker

cracks in the palace

the cracks are showing and even the new york times is writing about the secret war inside the kremlin, except its not even a secret anymore. fsb wants to keep the lights off and the doors locked, but the technocrats know you cant run a 21st-century country like its a gulag. nobody is dreaming of a bright russian future, theyre just hoping the next purge misses their floor. the only thing theyre innovating is new ways to cover their asses.

the elites are hedging their bets, stashing cash in dubai and pretending they still believe in the project. the people? just trying to survive, dodging mobilization and hoping the next round of sanctions doesnt wipe out whats left of their savings. the regime is running on inertia, duct tape, and the shared fear of what comes next.

tech dystopia, russian style

lets talk tech, because thats where the nakedness really starts to chafe. russias big ai push? its a meme. the domestic models are just chinese knockoffs running on hardware they begged from beijing. the only thing import substituted is the excuses. herman gref is out here asking china for chips like a kid trading lunch snacks. fsb doesnt care, as long as theyve got the big red switch to turn off the internet if someone tweets the wrong meme.

digital transformation, russian style: half the crew wants to build a cyberpunk dystopia, the other half just wants to keep the lights on long enough to finish their vodka. the brain drain is real, and the only thing getting plugged is the exit route for anyone with a clue.

politics on life support

putins got bigger problems than his ai not passing the turing test. duma elections are coming up, and for the first time in forever, the regime is actually nervous. not because they might lose (lol, come on), but because the whole process is getting harder to fake. the old tricks arent working. the population is restless, the elites are jumpy, and the only thing more inflated than the casualty numbers is the budget deficit.

every week the situation gets worse, and putin is heading into the fall in the weakest position hes ever been in. the west isnt buying the stability pitch anymore, the elites arent buying the loyalty pitch, and the people arent buying anything because the shelves are empty.

the war nobody wants

the big lie is that everyone supports the war, that the country is united, that mobilization is just a formality. reality check: nobody wants to die for a washing machine in donetsk. the regime has to keep finding new ways to drag people off the street and into the meat grinder, and every round of mobilization gets harder to sell. the budget for next year is basically a spreadsheet of wishful thinking and ious to the families of the next batch of conscripts.

the only thing more unstable than the front line is the mood in the kremlin. the threat, the bluff, the nuclear blackmail, the we can still make trouble if you dont respect us routine, its all getting old. you can only threaten the world so many times before everyone realizes youre just the guy yelling from the balcony while the building burns down.

the punchline

heres the punchline: the regimes biggest fear isnt a revolution, its irrelevance. the kremlin is obsessed with control, but the more they squeeze, the less they actually have. fsb can unplug the internet, but they cant plug the brain drain. technocrats can patch up the economy, but they cant patch up the trust. elites can fake loyalty, but they cant fake belief. and putin? he can parade around in his imaginary robes, but the only thing hes really wearing is the fear that everyones already seen through the act.

so yeah, tsar golyi. the emperor is naked, the palace is full of cowards, and the only thing holding the whole mess together is inertia and a shared terror of what comes next. the rest of the world is finally seeing it, but the real joke is the kremlin saw it first. they just cant say it out loud, because in russia, the first guy to point out the emperors ass usually ends up in a ditch. but trust me, theyre all thinking it. and thats why the shows almost over.

russian stability is just a guy in a bathrobe yelling at the neighbors while the house burns down and everyone inside is googling flights to anywhere else
