Let’s talk about the Russian “death spiral.

russian death spiral is not the fun kind with loops and screaming, its the kind where the economy eats itself while the regime calls it a “market correction.” no gas at the pump, grain rotting in the fields, wildberries faceplanted so hard its still twitching. if you want a happy ending, try another country, or another century.

the jenga tower economy

its 2026, and the russian economy is a jenga tower built out of IOUs, duct tape, and whatever is left in the sanctions-evading piggy bank. the war is still grinding, and every time ukraine hits another refinery or logistics hub, the “second army of the world” loses another piece of its supply chain. propaganda is still on loop: “everything is under control,” “temporary difficulties,” “import substitution.” even the babushkas are starting to side-eye the tv.

the regime keeps promising stability, but the only thing stable is the rate at which things fall apart. every hit to the economy drags down the rest, and the fixes are just more slogans and magical thinking. the system is out of tricks, and everyone knows it except the guys writing the speeches.

the russian dream is now just a lada that starts and a neighbor even more broke than you.

gas crisis: superpower on empty

nothing says “superpower” like a country that cant keep its own gas stations open. the headlines say “no gasoline,” but the real story is even dumber. refineries are getting smoked by ukrainian drones, and the stuff that makes it out is so watered down with mystery chemicals, its basically moonshine for your lada.

if you find a station with fuel, you pay double, and your engine’s lifespan is now measured in tiktok videos, not kilometers. the regime’s solution? “bodjazhit’” the fuel, cut it with whatever’s handy and hope nobody notices until the warranty’s up. spoiler: there is no warranty.

meanwhile, the logistics chains are shredded, so even if you have gas, you cant move anything. no gas means no transport, which means no food in the stores, which means more inflation and more angry people. the spiral feeds itself, and the regime just keeps spinning.

grain rotting, excuses growing

russia loves to brag about being the “breadbasket of eurasia,” but you cant eat propaganda. with logistics chains wrecked by sanctions and drone strikes, the grain just sits in the fields, grows mold, and becomes a buffet for rats. the ministry of agriculture says everything’s fine, but the only thing growing is the pile of excuses.

the regime can still export “patriotic values” and tiktok bans, but not much else. no grain exports means less hard currency, which means less money for imports, which means more “import substitution” comedy routines on state tv. the only thing moving fast is the blame game.

wildberries: zombie amazon

wildberries was supposed to be the pride of the “platform economy.” now its like if amazon got hit by a meteor, then a plague, then a bankruptcy lawyer, all in the same month. ukrainian drones turned their biggest warehouses into bonfires, vaporizing hundreds of billions of rubles in goods and infrastructure.

the company is technically still alive, like a zombie with a shopping cart, but:

the only thing they launched recently is a messenger app nobody asked for, because nothing says “we’re fine” like pivoting to chatbots while your warehouses are still smoldering. sellers lost their inventory in the fires, banks that financed those inventories are staring at a black hole, and the logistics sector is being told to “innovate” by switching from giant hubs to tiny local warehouses. the whole sector is circling the drain, and the main player is face-down in the dirt.

labor market: layoffs and lies

official unemployment is finally ticking up, even in moscow and the big cities. the economists on tv call it “normalization” or “market cooling,” but thats just code for “we’re out of money to keep people on the payroll.” layoffs are a taboo subject, especially in the one-factory towns where the only thing standing between “worker” and “alcoholic” is a monthly paycheck.

if they’re firing people now, it means the cash flow is gone and the regime cant even fake stability anymore. the pain is real and its spreading, no matter how many times the regime spins it. the only thing the state exports reliably these days is excuses and refugees.

the spiral tightens

the “death spiral” isnt just about gas, grain, or wildberries. its about a system that’s run out of tricks. every new crisis makes the next one worse. the more the regime tries to patch things up with quick fixes and propaganda, the deeper the hole gets.

sanctions didnt kill the russian economy overnight, but they turned every supply chain into a game of whack-a-mole. the war didnt break the system in one blow, but its grinding it down, one drone strike and one missed payment at a time. the spiral is slow, stupid, and humiliating.

the regime’s answer? more propaganda, more denial, more magical thinking. putin tells the government to rebuild logistics “at a new technological level,” which is hilarious when you remember most of the tech left the country two years ago. they talk about “resilience” and “sovereignty,” but the only thing they’re sovereign over is the ability to make things worse.

circus with no punchline

meanwhile, the people at the bottom get to watch their futures rot along with the grain. workers, farmers, small business owners, all stuck in the spiral while the regime claps for itself on tv. the only thing temporary is the patience of the people getting screwed.

so yeah, the spiral is real. its not a one-off, its not a phase, and its not going away. every time the kremlin says “temporary difficulties,” just remember: they’ve been saying that since the 90s. the rest of us just get to watch the circus, point at the clowns, and laugh, because if you dont, you’ll cry, and the regime hates it when you ruin their punchlines.

russian victory parade this year: a lada with a half tank of moonshine gas, a bag of moldy grain, and a wildberries box full of IOUs. clap harder, maybe the engine will start.
